Commonwealth Games 2010: New Delhi to take drastic safety precautions for 'Friendly Games'

Around 80,000 Delhi police officers, 17,500 paramilitary personnel including snipers and bomb disposal experts, 3,000 specialised commandos and 100 anti-sabotage teams will be deployed across the city as part of what organisers call an "impregnable" security plan.

The operation includes the unprecedented step of providing armed commandos on buses carrying athletes and officials to venues as well as lead vehicles with more armed officers.

measure follows last year's attack on a bus carrying the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore, Pakistan.

Despite fears of terrorist attacks in the Indian capital during the Games, security has proved less of an issue to the Commonwealth Games Federation than the problem of missed construction deadlines.

Mike Hooper, the CGF's chief executive, said: "When India bid for the Games, the government gave an undertaking to provide a safe and secure environment if Delhi was picked as host.

"Seven years since then and there is nothing to suggest that they are backing off from the promise."

The country has been on high alert since the Mumbai terror attacks two years ago and high security measures have already been introduced.

Most tourist hotels have already installed metal detectors and perform under-vehicle checks as a matter of routine.

The Metropolitan Police has provided advice to the Indian authorities and will return to Delhi during the Games to liaise with the local police and to monitor security arrangements in preparation for the 2012 London Olympics.

The highly visible operation will be evident from the moment athletes and fans step off their planes at Indira Gandhi International, which will be secured by commando forces a week before the start of the Games.

In the city, the massive police and military presence will be supported by the installation of 2,000 CCTV cameras and continual aerial surveillance.

All Games venues will be protected by four layers of security, watched over by rooftop snipers. Fans will have to pass through metal detectors and have their baggage X-rayed before entering stadiums.

New Delhi Commanwealth Games Village 2010

New Delhi is a business and political hub for India since medivial times till date. This is what it is famous for, in and outside India. It had an opportunity to host the Asian Games in 1981 but that was way back. It has regained its reputation as a business and political hub since then. What really is happening now is that New Delhi has to prove and present itself as a city which is a sports hub too apart from being just what it is.

New Delhi Games Village is something completely new that is happening in New Delhi or even in India

The Indian capital will have five new stadiums and a Games Village for the Commonwealth Games 2010 to be held in October.

One indoor stadium each will be constructed at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium for weightlifting, Indira Gandhi Sports Complex for wrestling, Siri Fort for badminton and squash and Yamuna Complex for table tennis.
